Mata Ortiz

Alex Ortega is a potter who lives and works in the village of Mata Ortiz. He usually works with his wife, Viviana Vivi Silveira. Together they usually make white body jars and fire them to be glossy black on the surface. Then they decorate the jars with sgraffito designs of insects, reptiles, animals and birds on a mesh or netting backdrop.
