Vickie Martinez (Koe-Sawe, meaning: Buffalo Steps) was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1967. She learned the fine art of making pottery the traditional way from her mother, Barbara Martinez, and her grandmother, Flora Naranjo. She has been producing pottery on her own since 1983.
Later in the 1980s she married Joey Chavarria. That led to Vickie working a bit with Teresita Naranjo and Stella Chavarria. That took her pottery making to another level.
Potters Sammy Naranjo and Chris Martinez are her brothers.
Vickie specializes in traditional carved red ware and black ware jars, bowls and wedding vases. She signs her work: Vickie Martinez, Santa Clara Pueblo.
