Effie Garcia (b. 1954 at Santa Clara) and her husband Orville Garcia (from Acoma) collaborate on their pottery production. Effie makes and polishes the pottery, Orville carves the designs, Effie sands the edges, Orville does any painting they want, both fire.
The daughter of Victoria Gutierrez and granddaughter of Faustina Gutierrez and Rosita Velarde, Effie learned from some of the best, watching and working with them as she grew up. Her sisters Ethel Yazza and Sally Gutierrez and brother Eugene Gutierrez learned the same way. But Effie's the only one who makes pottery full time. She's also busy with passing her knowledge and techniques on to her grandchildren, Brooklyn and Derrick.
Effie and Orville have earned awards regularly at the Santa Fe Indian Market since 1983. They produce both red and black elegant shaped bowls and beautiful deep-carved designs with precise edges.
