Anna Archuleta
Santa Clara Pueblo
Anna Archuleta is a traditional Santa Clara potter. She was born in 1953 and has been producing pottery since 1988. She and her sister, Anita Suazo, were taught by their mother Belen Tapia.
Anna specializes in stone polished redware carved bowls, jars and plates with bear claws, feather patterns, lightning and avanyu (the mythic Tewa Water Serpent) designs. She gathers clay from around Santa Clara Pueblo, uses only natural slips and the polishing stones passed down from her mother. Her husband Fidel collaborates with her on the pottery: Anna does all the handcoiling and polishing and Fidel does the carving and the outdoor firing.
