Born in 1941, Alma Loretto Maestas is a potter from Jemez Pueblo. Her lineage is 1/2 Jemez, 1/2 Laguna. Her mother, Carrie Reid Loretto, started teaching her the basics when she was about seven years old.
Alma began experimenting with clay and decided that she enjoyed making figurines most. These days Alma creates mostly clay figurines, storytellers, koshares and nativities but she also sometimes hand coils a piece of more traditional pottery.
