Rose was born and raised near Coal Mine Mesa in the western part of the Diné Nation. She learned to make pottery through watching and working with her aunt, Grace Barlow. Grace Barlow was also Betty Barlow Manygoats grandmother. Betty credits Grace with teaching her, too. Back then the neighbors were all teaching and learning from the neighbors. That's how and where Silas Claw, Faye Tso and many others began their pottery careers, too. On that basis I'm including Betty and her family here (Betty taught all her daughters to make pottery but only Elizabeth is a full-time potter).
