Norman Red Star was born into the Sioux Nation in 1955. He was inspired to get into pottery making by his uncle, Elmer Red Starr, but he didn't really add it to his artistic repertoire until he was about 40. Previously he had done some beadwork, hand-carved stone sculptures and paintings.
His pottery is based on Santa Clara Pueblo styles and clays plus his own sgraffito Sioux designs.
